What is Smart Goal and How to Set it Successfully?

How often do you set goals?

And how often do you achieve your goals?

When it comes to achieving goals, most people are not serious about it and in general, people often have doubts and don’t believe in their abilities to attain them.

Without setting a SMART goal you’re likely to get obstructed and lose focus…

The smart goal means you make your goals SMART:

S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Attainable
R – Relevant
T – Time-bound

We all know that setting goals are important, but we often don’t realize how important they are as we continue to move through life.

It is my passion to help every mommy who wants to be their own boss so they can spend more quality time with their family, to be able to do that.

Setting up a SMART goal can help you achieve that!

How To Set Smart Goals That Works

The problem with goal setting in general, people tend to set their goals with a lack of specificity and therefore make the final destination look hazy.

Several years ago, my husband and I battled with debt and continued to borrow our lifestyle from credit card purchases. It was really a nightmare living paycheck to paycheck and no way to sugar coat it.

Things got so bad that even our phone line was cut off. We were clearly buried in the debt trap and felt as if there was no way out.

I learned how to live on nothing but with the help of the SMART goals template, we were able to get out of debt for good.

S - SMART Goal Must Be Specific.

Your goals have to be clear and well-defined. Be specific as possible.

Decide exactly what you want to attain. Don’t go for being broad and name the exact improvement or result that you’re looking for.

Like for example in my case when I was drowning in credit card debts, my SMART goal looks like this.

Smart Goal Example:

I will pay off my $2,513 in my visa card (Specific) in 24 months (Time-bound).

And each month I will set aside $100 to pay off that debt (Measurable) and cut that card not to use it anymore (Attainable).

Then, I will pay pay off the next credit card debt so I can start savings to retire comfortably at 50 (Relevant).

M - SMART Goal Must Be Measurable.

The goal must go together with the first element that’s about specificity so that you can track your progress because without assessing progress, this is why most people give up on whatever they want to accomplish.

A measurable goal should address questions such as:

  • How much?
  • How many?

In my own personal SMART goal example, I set aside $100 each month to pay my credit card debt – exactly what turns a general goal into a measurable one.

A - SMART Goal Must Be Attainable.

Your goal also needs to be realistic for you to successfully attain it. In other words, it should stretch your abilities or resources but still remain possible to get it.

When you set an attainable goal, it may be easier to put your focus into it and get motivated that can bring you closer to it.

So makes sure you set your goal that is within reach. It is important because people in general set unrealistic goals that they can never achieve due to time constraints, budget, and other factors.

Before I travel and work at my own pace, my journey has not been easy, but with the help of smart goal setting and template, I was able to attain those things that I want in life.

Goals become unfulfilled dreams if you don’t set them SMART.

R - Smart Goal Must Be Relevant.

Now, ask yourself does this goal seem worthwhile to work on?

Make sure that your goal you set matters to you so you will get motivated to work towards it and stick with it.

When creating a goal, it’s important to retain control over them because you’re the ONLY person responsible for achieving your goals.

Each goal you set has to be relevant just like my own personal goal example I stated above, my goal was relevant for me to retire comfortably at the age of 50.

So make sure your goal is relevant and it means a lot to you. Otherwise, don’t even waste your time on such sudden urges and irrational desires to do something that will not help you get what you want in the future.

T - SMART Goal Must Be Time-bound.

Each and every one of us wants to achieve something.

Whether your goal is about to get out of debt (like me), quit your job, starting a business, financial freedom, or spend time traveling with your family, setting a deadline is crucial.

Your goals must have a start and finish date.

Most people set their goals without being specific and have no time boundaries.

When I created my ultimate smart goals template, I make sure that I set a deadline to focus on and something to work toward.

Otherwise, my smart goals template will just be like those beautiful goal- setting templates in Amazon or in Etsy.

A time-bound goal will usually answer these questions:

  • When?
  • What can I do two weeks from now?
  • Two months from now?
  • What can I do today?

In order to make a goal time-bound, add your deadline – year, month, week, or day when exactly you want to achieve it.  Like when I pay off my credit card debt with my smart goal example above, I set a deadline of 24 months.
