The best places to visit in Marrakech became part of our journey a few days after landing in Casablanca. Just the other day, our daughter flew in to meet us—she came straight from Glasgow, where she lives.
My husband and I had also come from Glasgow, but on a different flight.
Private Tour from Casablanca to Marrakech
On our third day, our driver picked us up at the Grand Mogador Hotel and started our journey toward Marrakech. We had arranged a private tour in advance, which included transportation and local guides. The drive from Casablanca to Marrakech took about three hours, giving us time to watch the changing scenery—open highways, quiet villages, and endless stretches of palm-lined roads.
Traveling by car gave us the flexibility to stop along the way, take a coffee break, and just relax. For a family trip, it was the perfect way to travel between cities.
First Guided Stop: Koutoubia Mosque
We arrived in Marrakech and went straight to our meeting point—the Koutoubia Mosque, the largest and most famous mosque in the city. Our tour guide met us there, and it marked the official beginning of our guided Marrakech travel experience.
The mosque is breathtaking, with its tower rising high above the surrounding buildings. Even though we couldn’t enter as non-Muslims, walking around the exterior and its peaceful gardens was a memorable experience.
Our guide explained the mosque’s history and significance—it was built in the 12th century and has remained a central part of the city’s identity ever since.
It was humbling to start our tour at such a historic site.
Standing near the Koutoubia Mosque, hearing the call to prayer and feeling the buzz of Marrakech around us, it felt like our Marrakech travel adventure had truly begun.
From there, we explored nearby parts of the old medina and were immediately drawn into the colors, sounds, and flavors of the city.
Second Stop: Exploring the Marrakech Medina
Entering the Heart of the City
After visiting the Koutoubia Mosque, our guide led us into the Marrakech medina—the old city surrounded by ancient walls. From the moment we stepped inside, it felt like we were walking through history.
Sights, Sounds, and Souks
The Medina was full of life. Narrow alleyways twisted in every direction, with market stalls selling colorful spices, handmade rugs, leather bags, and lanterns.
The smell of fresh herbs mixed with street food makes us feel hungry.
A Family Experience to Remember
Walking together as a family made the experience even more meaningful. I was drawn to the ceramic and pottery shops. While my daughter enjoys exploring those alleys that sell leather shoes.
Every corner held something new.
Local Life in Motion
We passed quiet small alleys with beautiful doors and watched local artisans working on everything from silver jewelry to wood carving. It was busy and loud, yet full of charm and character—exactly what we hoped for in our Marrakech trip.
Third Stop: Herbalism and Argan Oil in the Medina
One of the highlights of our time in the medina was visiting a traditional herbalist shop. Our guide took us to a local apothecary where shelves were lined with natural remedies, spices, and essential oils.
We learned about argan oil, how it’s made, and its many uses—from skincare to cooking. I even had a quick sample massage using warm argan oil, and it felt incredibly soothing after a long walk through the souks. It was a relaxing and unexpected moment during our busy day in Marrakech.
Fourth Stop: Stepping into History at Madrasa Ben Youssef
After our herbalist visit, we continued to the stunning Madrasa Ben Youssef, one of the most beautiful historical sites in Marrakech. Once an Islamic college, this place is known for its intricate tilework, carved cedar wood, and peaceful courtyard.
Walking through the old student rooms and looking up at the detailed arches, it was easy to imagine what life was like here centuries ago. Our guide shared that the madrasa could once house over 800 students.
It was quiet and calming inside—such a contrast to the busy medina. This stop gave us a deeper appreciation for Morocco’s artistic and cultural past.
Final Stop: Camel Ride Through the Palm Grove
To end our Marrakech tour on a fun and unforgettable note, we drove to the Palm Grove just outside the city for a camel ride. Though this is my second time riding camels, I am still a little nervous, but excited!
Dressed in traditional scarves provided by them, we climbed onto the camels and began a slow, peaceful walk through the palm-lined trails. The setting sun made the whole experience feel magical. It was the perfect way to wind down after a full day of exploring history, culture, and local life.
We laughed, took photos, and just enjoyed being together in such a unique setting. This camel ride made our Marrakech travel experience feel even more complete.
A Thoughtful Detour Before the Day Ended
Before heading back to Casablanca, our guide made a quick stop at Marjane, Morocco’s version of Carrefour. It’s a large local supermarket, and it was the perfect place for us to grab some Moroccan spices like cumin and ras el hanout, along with snacks and small souvenirs.
Then, as we arrived in Casablanca, he surprised us again with two more quick stops—just for our daughter. Since she had missed our original Casablanca tour, he made sure to take us to Pigeon Square and the breathtaking Hassan II Mosque.
Even though it had already been a full day, our guide took his time and let us explore both spots briefly. Seeing the mosque again, this time lit up in the early evening, felt like the perfect ending to our day.
It was such a thoughtful gesture of Sala, our guide, that made our Marrakesh trip experience feel even more personal and complete.
Wrapping Up Our Day in Marrakech
That day in Marrakech was truly unforgettable—from historic landmarks and vibrant markets to peaceful moments and a camel ride. Every stop felt carefully chosen, and having a kind, knowledgeable guide made all the difference.
For our family, this wasn’t just sightseeing—it was shared discovery, laughter, and meaningful connection. As we drove back to Casablanca, we knew this day would be one of the highlights of our Marrakech family trip.
